FencR - Improving The Fencing Experience
Enhancing the fencing experience through technology and data.
Why I Built FencR:
1. Training Hard, But Training Blind
I’ve spent the last 17 years in fencing — five of them competing for Notre Dame and another three on the international senior circuit. I trained with everything I had: physically, mentally, emotionally. But through all of that, I could not track or see my growth.
There were no tools to track our development. No system to look back and say: “Here’s what I worked on, here’s where I improved.” Outside of USA Fencing’s point standings and a running count of wins and losses, we had no objective measure of progress.
It didn’t make sense. Many sports have embraced variability in performance — understanding that results don’t always reflect effort or growth. But in fencing, too many athletes fall into the trap of defining themselves solely by outcomes. We’re left comparing ourselves to others with no way of truly understanding our own path.
2. 5 Years of Lost Data — And the Turning Point
In 5 years of NCAA fencing, I learned more than I could’ve imagined. I struggled my freshman year, then grew into a 1st Team All-American by my junior season. I joined Team USA in 2021 and traveled the world competing at World Cups and Grand Prix events. And yet — looking back — I would have loved to see the highs and lows visualized.
There’s no training history. No snapshots of my growth. No record of what actually worked.
After a string of rough results on the senior circuit, I hit a wall. I worked with a sports psychologist and began tracking something simple: my perceived exertion and recovery. I started writing notes after practices. Logging how I felt. Rating my sessions. Suddenly, I wasn’t just reacting to results — I was owning my performance.
That was the seed for FencR.
I built it because I needed it.
3. We Need Better Communication & Video Tools
Across all levels, from youth fencing to national teams, I’ve worked with coaches who each do things their own way. And that’s fine — but what’s missing is consistency.
Fencers need a way to stay organized. To review film with structure. To track insights and keep coaches and athletes on the same page.
FencR allows coaches to create Clubs, invite their fencers, upload footage, add notes, and track development in one place. Whether it’s a private lesson, a drill, or a tournament bout — now it’s all stored and easy to revisit. Fencers can build their own library of performance and stay accountable to their goals.
We can’t improve what we don’t track. This makes it simple.
FencR isn’t just a performance software tool.
It’s a return to what makes this sport fun — seeing your journey, owning your experience, and building toward something meaningful.
It’s not about chasing results.
It’s about becoming the best version of yourself, on and off the strip.
That’s what I believe in. That’s what I’m building.
